Final Curatorial Project

This Blog is developed for my Final Curatorial Project for
Kazys Varnelis, Networked Culture, course at Columbia University 2009

My topic is The Materialization of the Internet, focusing on the introduction of the inhome 3D printer, as a desktop factory.

I examine what has been developed so far, what capabilities it may hold, and how it might come to be introduced to us.

Technology developments go backwards to go forward

I find it interesting that as the PC was invented it was no more than text and code, nothing to be excited about, nothing anyone was racing out to the stores to get if they didn't already need a typewriter.

As the industries of production were focused on Autos and other machinery i find it interesting that at the introduction of the internet and digital technologies, the course of mass production started focusing on technologies that are portals for what you want, (PC as portal for internet, i-phone as portal for communications and internet) Whereas earlier industry was in the physical world for physical activities. (Cars for moving)

As the internet was first developed it was no more than a digital telegraph, code and text only.

It is important when accepting new possibilities in new technologies to understand that small advances are sometimes very significant ones.

Flat World Information

Although there is a large variety of technology in physical production. These are all endlessly replaceable portals or interfaces for a world of Information. But this endless world is all contained within the realm of the 2D, Flat information. Data.
The introduction of something like a 3D printer could materialize all this data.

Paper Waste

Consider how many times you may have printed out directions from Google maps rather than owning a single map.

The myth of the Paperless office.

Paper and Printer Sales Skyrocketed as the internet has been introduced to the workplace and home.

Industry use 3D printing

These three designs were possible in home ued 3D printers.
The one on the left starting at $5,000 is no longer in production.
But prices are rapidly dropping.
