Maker Bot is part of a lab development enthused by the inevitable promise of the 3D printer in home. A cheap printer they developed extrudes ABS plastic layer by layer.
RepRap is a "self-replicating" printer in which parts also extruded by ABS plastic can make items larger than the tray it is developed with.
